2% is more than fashion—it’s a statement, a community, and a call to rethink what we wear and why we wear it.
Fast fashion and the the textile production industry are producing alarmingly negative environmental impacts.
92 million tons of textile waste is generated globally each year (EMF, 2017).
This is equivalent to a truckload of clothes being discarded every second.
Much of the waste generated by the fast fashion industry is shipped to countries in Africa and Southeast Asia (GAIA, 2020).
40% of donated clothes are deemed unusable and end up in massive waste dumps or are burned, causing severe environmental pollution and health hazards.
Synthetic textiles contribute 35% of microplastic pollution in the oceans (Boucher & Friot, 2017).
This pollution has harmful effects on marine ecosystems, with microplastics entering the food chain and eventually impacting human health.
Garment workers are typically paid less than $3 per day, despite working long hours in unsafe and exploitative conditions (CCC, 2019).
Chronic exposure has been linked to skin diseases, respiratory issues, and even cancers among factory workers (Greenpeace, 2012).
